20. Valour and Bravery of Bashkir Soldiers at the Border

First attacks of the invaders were aimed at the frontier guard. Being attacked by massive forces of the enemy they were holding up German land units and armoured vehicles. Some of frontier outposts averted all front formations thrusts but they were finally attacked on flanks and besieged.

Brest Fortress defence is an example of incredible heroism of Soviet soldiers. A small fortress post was averting massive enemy’s attacks for three months.

The opponent had triple or even five-times predominance and kept executing an offensive in all important directions. But land army success was determined by air-forces. During the first war day the Nazi made 66 air raids on airports of border regions and exterminated 1200 our planes, 400 of them were destroyed in the air.

Three first weeks of the war were extremely successful for the Germans. Having got through the first strategic echelon they advanced to 300-600 kilometres into our country.

Despite this rapid improvement advancing Nazi army faced strong resistance for the first time in the II World War and were suffering from unexpectedly big losses in comparison with Western European Campaign.
