47. Victory Parade 1945

On the 24th of June 1945 at 10 a.m. the Red Square in Moscow hosted the parade on the occasion of the Victory of the Soviet Union over Nazi Germany in the Great Patriotic War. The parade was taken by Soviet Union marshal G. Zhukov, the first deputy People’s Commissar of Defence of the USSR, deputy Supreme Commander-in-Chief and Commander-in-Chief of the 1st Belarus front. The parade was in command of Soviet Union marshal K. Rokossovskiy, deputy Supreme Commander-in-Chief and of the 2nd Belarus front.

The Victory Parade was participated by joined regiments of different fronts, People’s Commissariat of Defence and Navy, military academies, vocation schools and units of Moscow post. Joint regiments were formed with privates, sergeants and officers of different branches of troops who had distinguished themselves in battles and got battle orders. Fronts and navy regiments on the Red Square were followed by the joint column of Soviet warriors carrying 200 low Nazi banners as a symbol of the forces defeated at the battlefield. With drums hammering, these banners were thrown to the foot of the Mausoleum to symbolise the aggressor’s defeat. Then Moscow formations marched. These were a joint regiment of People’s Commissariat of Defence, Military Academy, Military and Suvorov schools, a joint regiment of the cavalry brigade, artillery, motorized, air-borne and tank divisions and subdivisions. In total the march engaged 35 thousand people.

At 23.00 Moscow sky was lighted and hundreds of aerostates appeared, fireworks burst out with colourful flashes. The highlight of the celebration was a banner with the Order of Victory that appeared in the light.
