3. Machinery Building. Ufa Engine Plant

Machinery building plants evacuated to Ufa formed a chain with local industrial enterprises. Odessa Machine-Tool Plant named after Lenin was housed at Sterlitamak Machine and Tractor Station. Blagoveshchensk Machinery Building Plant hosted People’s Commissariat Oil Industry Machinery Plant from Tuapse.

This cooperation created the biggest machinery plant in USSR within a short term. They managed to assemble and put into operation several enterprises for low current appliances, machine-tools, drilling equipment, axis and mechanic devices, car and tractor parts.

Ufa Engine Plant was producing engines for harvesters and sheltered equipment from several aviation engine plants from Rybinsk, Moscow, Leningrad. The plant started to manufacture Klimov’s M-13 and VK-105 aviation engines. The plant issued 50-60 engines per day, During the war the plant produced 52 thousand aviation engines (since 1924 they had produced over 97 thousand ones). Ufa Engine Plant acquired manufacturing of engines for Pe-2 bombers, Yak-3, Yak-7, Yak-9 fighter aircrafts.

Ufa Engine Plant got 11 production buildings over the winter 1941-1942, 42 km of railways, a depot, transport premises to place arrived equipment. The plant built 127 houses and two tent cities housing 6600 people.

During the war Mikhail Ferin became the most significant steelworker, he organised application of new machinery, became one of the inventors of the new heat-resistant alloy for aviation engines.
