34. Guard Rifle Division No. 21 (No. 361)

Guard Rifle Division No. 21 was formed in September-October 1941 in Ufa, Bashkir ASSR (Ural military district) by the order of People’s Commissariat of Defence No. 239002 dated the 11th of August 1941. It was initially named Rifle Division No. 361.

On the 17th of December 1941 Rifle Division No. 361 arrived in Kalininskiy front. War actions started on the 28th of December 1941.

During the Great Patriotic war, the division was a part of 39th and 22nd Armies, 4th Shock and 1st Shock Armies and other formations. The division fought through 850 kilometres, retook 15 cities and 1500 settlements,

Their deeds were rewarded and the division was renamed Guard Rifle Division No. 21 by the order of People’s Commissariat of Defence No. 078 dated the 17th of March 1942.

In October 1943 Guard Rifle Division No. 21 was honourably entitled as Guard Rifle Nevel Division. 14,7 thousand members of the division were awarded with orders and medals, three division members became Heroes of the Soviet Union.

The division participated in retaking the Baltic, destroying the opponent’s troops in Courland.

From 1941 till 1945 Guard Rifle Nevel Division No. 21 was being led by guard colonel Mikhailov who would have got the title of major general by the end of the war.
