In August 1941 the republic hosted the USSR Academy of Sciences Volga-Bashkir expedition containing 100 researches and engineers. They drew a detailed map prospectively assessing oil deposits in the Bashkir Transurals.

In September 1943 an exploration well near Kinzebulatovo village in Ishimbay district exploded with a strong oil fountain.

Within the war period they managed to explore over 20 oil deposits across the republic. Bashkiria started developing them and kept its leading position in oil extraction across the Urals and Volga region. By the end of the war Bashkiria was the second in the USSR list on oil exploitation.
