During the war Ufa was the key rear communication centre. Intercity phone and telegraph cables were running between Ufa and Sverdlovsk, Ufa and Menzelinsk, Ufa and Orenburg, Ufa and Krasnoufimsk, as well as through Orsk, Kartaly, Tuimazy and Yutazy. Ufa sheltered a large Comintern Radio Station evacuated from Moscow. The capital city of the republic became the sanctuary for the People’s Commissariat for Communication with the central automatic telephone station being constructed there.
